"Hold on to what’s important" - Rueben Tipene
This is a wonderful design - it is a really solid piece in every sense of the word. Rueben has used a substantial piece of tangiwai, and carved it with a graceful elongation that lightens the appearance of the matau. The front face is adorned with carved koru that draw the eye down and around the hook - this is a marvellous piece of carved art!
PUPURI possesses a dainty and graceful symmetrical form - power meets grace! Rueben has polished the piece to a satin/matte luster that promotes the deep grey colour and the softer grey marbling.
A LITTLE ABOUT THE MATAU...
The matau, or hook pendant is revered throughout the South Pacific as a symbol for life, well-being and prosperity. Its significance arises from the key role that fishing has played in sustaining island families and communities. The owner of a good hook was respected and held a place of authority in the community.
The Hook: The wearer of a Hei-Matau is seen as a provider and protector who is strong willed and determined to succeed in life - what a lovely sentiment to gift to someone important to you.
PUPURI is provided with a hand plaited, adjustable cosmos and blue moon grey cord.
Take a look at the video and you will appreciate the artistry of this beautiful piece.
