ONE PIECE ONLY - COLLECTIBLE
This is a spectacular rendition of the Ruru, or owl, hand carved from a beautiful creamy coloured mammoth ivory.
In some Māori tradition it is believed the owl represents the ancestral spirit of the family group. This spirit was called Hine-ruru - the owl woman - and it was believed that she acted as a guardian to warn, advise and protect.
Other legend says that the owl is strongly connected to the spirit world. If and owl was seen near a house, or if it flew inside, this would signify that a death was imminent in the family.
Without a doubt the ruru is a very special bird which is held very dear in our part of the world. Locally we call them morepork which is how they sound when they call in the night.
This piece will become someone's treasure.
We can provide this with, or without a cord. Please contact us if you would like to discuss this beautiful carving.
