Hand carved whale bone matau pendant.
This is a medium sized piece. The hook is a traditional design with a small decorative raised tooth detail on the front edge. The necklace cord is plaited and length adjustable and is a Seaweed Green colour. The binding around the hook's shaft is in Olive Green.
The matau, or hook pendant is revered throughout the South Pacific as a symbol for life, well-being and prosperity. Its significance arises from the key role that fishing has played in sustaining island families and communities. The owner of a good hook was respected and held a place of authority in the community.
Whale bone is quite porous and will absorb body oils. It will take on a golden colour over time. Local belief would say that the pendant absorbs the wearer's mana (spirit), and becomes a part of you.
We deliver this pendant on a hand plaited, adjustable cord and will include our 'Kia Ora' card, which explains the meaning behind the hook design.
