This beautiful, carved rendition of our much-loved pāua shell is made from a bowenite stone known locally as Tangiwai. This stone is a bluish green colour and has a beautiful translucence evident when backlit.
Bowenite is a type of serpentine and is traditionally believed to hold healing properties. Tangiwai is an abbreviation of the Māori word 'kokotangiwai' - koko meaning a cut into one's spirit causing deep sorrow, tangi meaning the crying associated with this sorrow and wai meaning the shedding of tears.
This material has a long history of use by Māori as a form of adornment because of its great beauty.
This carving combines a beautiful stone with a traditional source of food - the pāua - a marvellous pendant.
