TE TURANGA: The Foundation

We are absolutely delighted to have this outstanding piece available to offer. TE TURANGA is a large and beautifully carved piece of jewellery, parts very traditional, and with some wonderful personal touches from the artist.

Carved with a great deal of care and thought, the artist describes it's meaning as follows...

This Taonga combines Obay stone, bone, brass, and eyes of pāua. It has been named Te Turanga which translates to 'the foundation'.

Obay is a rare stone located in only one small area within the Golden Bay region near the top of the South Island. It is a fine-grained stone consisting of epidote, biotite, chlorite, rutile, pyrite and gold. Also found in the material is deep blue kyanite crystals to 20 mm length, abundant chromite, and strongly zoned tourmaline forming clusters of minute crystals. This makes each carving with this stone unique and individualised. The smooth texture is very comforting and makes a wonderful touchstone. To care for it, it will benefit from a small rubbing of oil from time to time. Fondling the taonga will not only infuse it with your own energy and love, but it will also absorb the oils from your skin, increasing the sheen and making it truly yours.

In context with the carving, it represents strength and the formation of life upon a firm foundation. The brass in between the bone and stone represents the conducting of great power. This adds great strength, stability and symbolises interconnectedness.

Attached above this is a manaia that is surrounded by its wings on all sides. This forms a protective barrier. As a manaia is symbolic of a spiritual messenger, the protection we are talking about is spiritual in nature. The right wing contains three main elements, this symbolises the unity of body, spirit and mind. The kowhaiwhai patterns arising upon the body depict the unfolding of new life through grace.

The pattern in the centre of the taonga upon the lower part of the manaia symbolises the passing down of wisdom teachings. The stories of those who have gone before us. The good qualities of the orator and listener. On the back, kowhaiwhai pattern continues. This is the representation of the ocean between Aotearoa and the rest of the world. The land being represented by the stone at the base.

TE TURANGA is lovingly packaged in a woven kete pouch and is provided with a Sage/Khaki adjustable cord. Also included in your package, a note from the carver about your original work of Art to Wear.
