THE DESERT ROAD
In stock
THE DESERT ROAD - A barren and desolate stretch of road in our central North Island. Renowned for its volcanic landscapes and isolated beauty.
This is a stunning New Zealand Flower Jade Toki hand carved by Ross Crump for us.
The gorgeous soft gold and brown colours in the bottom of the toki reflect the arid browns and golden tones seen along this road. The cord and binding colours are a reflection of the harsh volcanic landscape.
If you're driving North on the left are the three live volcanoes - Ruapehu, Tongariro and Ngāuruhoe. The landscape is the colours on the bottom of this piece. On the right are the Kaimanawa Ranges - various shades of green, reflected in the top of this piece. Through this awesome landscape runs THE DESERT ROAD.
We'll let the photos, and the video, speak for this gorgeous pendant.
The toki, or adze, is a symbol of strength. The adze was a key survival tool, so the owner of a good one was believed to be strong and powerful. They were used to carve ocean-going waka (sea canoes) and to build central meeting houses so they played a central role in traditional life of māori.
The jade used to carve this stunning Toki came from the West Coast on New Zealand's South Island, from the Marsden valley. It was created in the alpine fault and was shaped and given further character in our alpine rivers.
The toki is traditionally worn for strength and courage - to assist through life's challenges.
We also include one of our 'Kia Ora' cards, which explains the meaning behind the Toki design.
