TOPHAT - This is a tiny pendant with a little secret!
Hand carved from BURMITE, or Burmese Amber, this piece has an ancient fly captured in its heart. Around 100 million years old, this amber was produced in the Cretaceous Period. Back then the viscous amber was doing its job protecting the tree from predatory threats, and it captured a little fly or wasp and preserved it over the ages. We're delighted to shine a little light on that process that was underway so long ago!
Burmite is a resin which has been formed during periods when mountains have been forced upward - the resultant high pressure and temperatures alter the structure of the resin and create the fascinating internal fractures and waves. These are not faults, rather a reflection of the process that has created this gorgeous material.
Look at the photos and watch the brief video - it's worth the few moments and will give you a complete picture of this pendant.
