For this piece we have used three materials. The toki is handmade from nephrite jade, the central insert is carved from a gorgeous piece of mammoth tusk and we have capped it with Sterling Silver.
We had our mammoth material carbon dated to get an accurate measure of its age. The testing was done for us by GNS Science, a New Zealand Crown Research Institute and New Zealand's leading provider of Earth, geoscience and isotope research - so their assessment of this material is as accurate as is possible using radiocarbon dating technology.
A beautiful original piece of jewellery that you will enjoy immensely. Take a moment to watch the short video - it reveals the craftsmanship, shape and the beautiful combination of materials.
The pendant is suspended with a 60cm sterling silver chain.
The toki, or adze, is a symbol of strength. The adze was a key survival tool, so the owner of a good one was believed to be strong and powerful. They were used to carve ocean-going waka (sea canoes) and to build central meeting houses so they played a central role in traditional life of māori.
The toki is traditionally worn for strength and courage - to assist through lifes' challenges.
