This piece is a wonderful flowing manaia hand carved from New Zealand Flower Jade. The head of the stone is a lovely grass green, merging into lighter milky greens and yellows - an eye grabbing piece of Jade.
The carvers skill is evident. The best pieces we see combine a technical carving talent with a spacial ability to craft design to the material. Ross is a master at pulling this off. In UNDEFEATED he has built the design around the stone - the result is an authentic, grounded piece.
Ross has incorporated a koru spiral in the tail which gives the design an interesting symbology:
The Manaia: a mythical being believed to be the invisible light, or aura, surrounding a person. They represent spiritual power and are believed to be the guide that leads the spirits to heaven. They are worn to guide and protect.
The Koru: the Māori word for 'loop'. The spiral shaped koru design represents an unfolding silver fern frond. The circular movement towards an inner coil refers to ‘going back to the beginning’. The unfurling frond itself is symbolic of new life, new beginnings, hope and rebirth.
