WAKA HOE

A large, slender and beautifully bound Toki, hand carved by Ric Moor.

WAKA HOE is carved from a stunning piece of New Zealand Marsden Jade. It is a beautiful deep green colour with a few characteristic pale inclusions at the head, and down at the edge of the blade - this is a gorgeous pendant.

We have named this piece WAKA HOE after the paddle used to drive ocean-going waka (canoes). These were traditionally carved from Kahikatea wood - a strong and relatively light material that could handle the challenges of a long ocean voyage.

The neck cord is a 4-plait brown cord which can be adjusted with a couple of slip knots.

The toki, or adze, is a symbol of strength. The adze was a key survival tool, so the owner of a good one was believed to be strong and powerful. They were used to carve ocean-going waka (sea canoes) and to build central meeting houses so they played a central role in traditional life of māori.

The toki is traditionally worn for strength and courage - to assist through life's challenges.

We also include one of our 'Kia Ora' cards, which explains the meaning behind the Toki design.

Delivery with Express Courier is included in the price.
