This is a significant carving - a visually stunning pendant carved from a beautiful piece of local flower jade.
The hei-matau, or hook, is an important symbol in South Pacific culture - it signified the ability to put food on the table for the family and the village. Someone able to do this had stature and authority.
This is a wonderful exemplar of the hook. Beautifully carved with fine detail, it incorporates a central koru. Worn on one side it looks like a koru, on the other it appears more like a traditional matau or hook - wear it either way and it looks fantastic. We love this pendant!
The Hei-Matau is a powerful symbol representing prosperity, abundance and fertility. It is also believed to provide good luck and safety when travelling over water.
