Description

A beautiful pendant in a traditional māori mere club design, carved for us by Rueben Tipene.

Take a look at the video to see the shape of the pendant and the wonderful colour of the stone - a Marsden jade - Rueben has used.

The history of the MERE - as recorded in an extract from the Museum of New Zealand 'Te Papa' website.

One-handed weapon. Made from pounamu (nephrite jade). Featuring a flat elongated blade with a sharp striking edge.

These were originally made as weapons of war - designed for close quarters fighting to disarm and disable opponents. In the right hands they were tremendously effective.

These days the Mere represents the fighting spirit of Māori - they are often seen wielded by Māori leaders when delivering impassioned speeches at important occasions.
