HONONGA - Waters That Connect - a drop pendant for three cultures, one spirit

Named HONONGA - this drop-shaped pendant is crafted from a unique blend of whale bone, beef bone, brass, pounamu, and opal. It was created to symbolise cultural ties shared between people and countries.

A legacy piece that will hold a special place in the family of whoever owns it. This is an exceptional carving thoughtfully designed and meticulously carved by Andrew Doughty.

A description of this carving in the artists words...

This taonga is a mix of beef bone, whale bone, brass, pounamu and opal. It has been named Hononga which means to be union, connected, bond.

The bone at the top is whale bone. This comes from the Kaikoura region. It symbolises a strong connection with the sea. It recognises that relationship of the sea to sustain and carry life.

The pounamu is from the Douglas Creek located on the West Coast. It is a beautiful stone. This represents strength, stability and being grounded. With a solid foundation, many great things may be constructed upon this. The greatest foundation being the love for the truth of God. In between the bone and pounamu are inlays of brass. Brass is conductive. As such, this represents the flow of energy from above to below and visa versa. Whilst many analogies can be drawn from this, in this case it is symbolic of the veil between the physical and spiritual dimensions of our life.

The bottom aspect is reminiscent of a ray (Whai). In general, this represents adaptability and strength. The Fa'amanii (spear heads) symbolize having a fighting spirit. Another aspect of being strong. The double shark teeth is a traditional symbol of protection. In this instance, the protection comes from wisdom.

The pattern running up the centre depicts our prayers, communications and intimacy with the Creator. While the three components joined together represent the Samoan, Māori and Australian connections. On the back is a small inlay of opal that came from the Australian Glengarry opal mine.

HONONGA is a marvellous piece that will certainly draw attention and comment.
