Hand carved from a wonderful piece of New Zealand argillite stone by Rueben Tipene.
Rueben has etched a subtle design into the face of the pendant and used a dual polishing technique to provide a visual contrast and a wonderful tactile feel. This is a beautiful piece of art to wear!
The matau, or hook pendant is revered throughout the South Pacific as a symbol for life, well-being and prosperity. Its significance arises from the key role that fishing has played in sustaining island families and communities. The owner of a good hook was respected and held a place of authority in the community.

The Hook: The wearer of a Hei-Matau is seen as a provider and protector who is strong willed and determined to succeed in life - what a lovely sentiment to gift to someone important to you.
