In the artists words below...

This small taonga is named Kāhuarau which means metamorphosis.

In the centre of the bone is an inlay of copper. This divides the left- and right-hand side of the carving. At one level it symbolises the veil between spiritual and physical worlds, life and death, hope and despair, contrasting destinies, at another level it represents the ability to be transformed. Copper is conductive, therefore symbolising our ability to receive power from the Wairua Tapu and be regenerated.

The kowhaiwhai pattern on the right further emphasises this contrast and the journey of life with all its twists and turns.

Each carving is handcrafted and is unique. The difference in each piece of bone
makes these incredibly individualised.
