Rueben has used a gorgeous piece of New Zealand Argillite for this piece. It is a striking deep grey and silver coloured stone with its own original character. Rueben has finished it with a satin/matte polish which gives the carving a wonderful feel and highlights the subtle variations in the stone's makeup beautifully.
The matau, or hook pendant is revered throughout the South Pacific as a symbol for life, well-being and prosperity. Its significance arises from the key role that fishing has played in sustaining island families and communities. The owner of a good hook was respected and held a place of authority in the community.
