GENESIS IN TANGIWAI - a large and striking koru pendant carved in New Zealand Tangiwai Pounamu.

Hand carved by celebrated jade carver Kerry Thompson, this substantial pendant reinterprets the iconic koru spiral. Kerry’s visionary hand is evident in the bold scale of the design, and the exquisite, deep-green tangiwai he has selected - a prized stone known for its emotional resonance and glass-like depth.

The form is a study in fluid grace, its sweeping lines capturing the eternal unfurling of new life. The stone used tells a more complex story. The rich, dark-green base is dramatically patterned with delicate silver inclusions - natural iron minerals that trace through the jade like a personal cartography. This striking contrast creates a dynamic, textural presence, ensuring every angle reveals a new detail.

The cord emerges from a subtly cupped groove carved into the apex. This thoughtful detail elevates its wearability, ensuring the piece sits gracefully while adding a refined architectural element to the organic form.

Tangiwai is the most ancient form of pounamu and takes its name from the Māori 'tangi' - to cry and 'wai' - water, 'tears of sorrow'. It is the perfect stone for this marvellous pendant.

The Koru: the Māori word for 'loop'. The spiral shaped koru design represents an unfolding silver fern frond. The circular movement towards an inner coil refers to ‘going back to the beginning’.  The unfurling frond itself is symbolic of new life, new beginnings, hope and rebirth.
