RERE RATAPU - Sunday Glide
A significant work of art, suitable for both wearing and display. Hand carved by Andrew Doughty, this substantial necklace is crafted from bone with inlays of jade, pāua shell, and brass, and is accompanied by a wooden display stand.
This piece is a contemporary, chest-plate carving depicting the outspread wings of the kāhu - the New Zealand hawk.
This work is visually striking, beautifully designed and masterfully carved - a gorgeous depiction of the outstretched wings of the hawk. Beyond this, it carries layered meaning - each wing bearing its own symbolic weight. The left wing represents love and compassion; the right, wisdom and discernment. These qualities are not overtly stated but revealed through the detail carved into the bone - fine lines, careful negative space, and a balanced asymmetry that invites closer inspection.
RERE RATAPU can be worn or displayed on its custom maire wood stand. In either form it stands as a fine sculptural piece.
This is a significant work of art, designed and created by a very fine artist working with precision, restraint, and genuine depth of thought.
