THE FAIRY CALLER - fine jade sculpture

In the world of fine sculptural art, few materials demand as much skill and patience as jade. To transform this ancient stone is to converse with the very essence of nature.

A recent triumph in this demanding discipline emerged from the prestigious International Jade Carving Competition in Suzhou, China: a delicate, award-winning sculpture that captures a fleeting, whimsical feeling. A poetic exploration of fragility and resilience, where geology meets botany and a hidden surprise awaits.

The artist’s own reflections unveil the quiet philosophy embedded within the stone.

THE FAIRY CALLER

This intricate sculpture was created specifically for the International Jade Carving Competition in Suzhou, China. It depicts a solitary gooseberry, perfectly balanced upon three slender tendrils.

The berry’s cap is a miniature leaf with its own coiling tendril, meticulously carved to capture the deep, intense hues of Australian Black Cowell Jade. Suspended beneath is a tiny, hidden bell - the enchanting feature that inspired the piece’s name, “THE FAIRY CALLER.”

The body of the gooseberry itself is a marvel of craftsmanship, entirely hollowed out from a radiant piece of British Columbian Green jade. It rests upon its trio of tendrils, also fashioned from Australian Black Cowell Jade, which are anchored to a subtle base of New Zealand basalt.

In the hand, its true character emerges. The berry possesses gentle, natural curves, and the central vein along its back nestles perfectly into a grooved tendril, reminiscent of a serpent’s tongue. The cap turns freely, allowing it to be positioned according to the holder’s fancy.

“I have always been drawn to the small, quiet forms in nature, the ones that seem fragile at first, yet hold a quiet strength. The delicate skin of the gooseberry, its fine veins, and the way it glows in the light all feel both vulnerable and enduring at the same time.

This little sculpture, The Fairy Caller, carries that feeling. Inside, hidden where the berry would grow, rests a small tinkling bell. This subtle chime is a reminder of the unseen layers of patience and perseverance that live inside modest things, adding a little bit of magic.

This piece is my tribute to those magical fleeting moments in nature that reveal strength in the softest, most unassuming ways.”
