WIKITŌRIA - to Overcome, to Prevail
Hand carved Whale Bone Manaia Pendant by Andrew Doughty.
WIKITŌRIA is a significant carving, executed in whalebone recovered from a whale that stranded on the East coast of the South Island near Kaikōura, New Zealand.
It depicts a manaia - a mythical being that lives half in this world and half in the world of the spirits. The design is highly detailed, with precise, fine carving evident throughout - every line and curve resolved with technical mastery.
The manaia’s eyes are set with black Mother of Pearl, each containing an inlaid pounamu pupil, adding a piercing stare. Every element of the composition is thoughtfully connected, with no aspect overlooked or understated. The result is a flawlessly executed taonga of the highest order, serious in tone and unmistakably the work of a carver operating at the peak of their craft.
WIKITŌRIA will be delivered packaged in a woven kete pouch and is provided with a black adjustable cord. Also included in your package, a note from the carver about your original work of Art to Wear.
