SNAPPER - Hand carved bone matau pendant, carved by Yuri Terenyi
A strong pendant with tons of character.
The bone colour is fairly consistent and very tight grained. It is a lovely golden creamy white colour, with a very light tea-based stain. This is a beautifully carved piece - it is chunky and strong but has a balanced form that gives it a real presence.
The matau, or hook pendant is revered throughout the South Pacific as a symbol for life, well-being and prosperity. Its significance arises from the key role that fishing has played in sustaining island families and communities. The owner of a good hook was respected and held a place of authority in the community.
We deliver this pendant on a hand plaited, adjustable cord and will include our 'Kia Ora' card, which explains the meaning behind the hook design.
