SIGHTED

In stock

This a lovely piece, hand carved from New Zealand Kawakawa Jade - the typical dark inclusions give the carving a lovely variation which are perfect for the subject. The subtle details in this piece are gorgeous - the eye is a koru swirl delineating the skull from the beak. Kyohei has carved a gentle, flowing design that is very attractive and tactile - it feels wonderful in the hand.

SIGHTED is a contemporary representation of the Huia bird. To Māori the huia was a sacred treasure - highly ranked chiefs and their family members wore the striking tail feathers in their hair as both a decoration and a symbol of their position. This was a beautiful and revered bird in New Zealand.

The Huia is a, now extinct, native bird of New Zealand. They were apparently a little 'ecologically naive' and being poor flyers were easy prey for two and four-legged predators! More is the shame because they were a lovely and striking song-bird.

This carving depicts a male head and beak. The male had a shorter beak than the female. It is a great tribute to another lost icon of our bush.

Take a close look at the photos to appreciate the detail of this piece.

We will supply this with a hand-plaited 4-strand black, adjustable cord.

We have added a photo (courtesy of Wikipedia) of a print of a male and female Huia - just to give you a little perspective!
