TARANAKI PANEL - ONE

An intricately carved piece, replicating carved wooden panels from New Zealand's Taranaki region. This particular design was commonly found in whare (huts or houses) and were used as decorative wall panels. They were traditionally carved using stone and bone chisels and could be beautifully intricate in design. The designs tell the history of the tribe, honoured ancestors and preserved their history.

Yuri has carved a lovely homage in bone to these historically very important panels. This piece is carved from bone and stained with a tea dye that Yuri makes specifically for these pieces. Over time, and with wear, the colour of this piece will alter and soften - they seem to take on a look that is unique to the wearer depending on what they are subjected to. So a unique piece of jewellery will become a very personal piece.

We have bound this with a hand-plaited Wapiti Brown and Gingernut cord.

The carved faces in this piece probably represent the faces of ancestors, important people in the tribes history. This record of ancestry provides the layers of history that are the foundation of a tribes' whakapapa, its genealogy.

Delivered to you on our combo cord of Wapiti Brown and Gingernut and is length adjustable. We will ship this with Express Courier.

We will also include our 'Kia Ora' card, which explains the meaning behind the Tiki design.
