THE GHOST is a medium-sized Matau by Kerry Thompson.

The colour of the stone is a shimmering pale grey, finished in a high polish. Kerry has a unique ability to polish stone so that it presents in the most striking manner. The bright shine on this piece reflects the light and gives the carving movement as the light passes over the curved faces.

The matau, or hook pendant is revered throughout the South Pacific as a symbol for life, well-being and prosperity. Its significance arises from the key role that fishing has played in sustaining island families and communities. The owner of a good hook was respected and held a place of authority in the community.
