Description


This manaia with twist design is the work of Yuri Terenyi, a creative and exceptionally skilled bone carver and artist. ENIGMA is made to be worn, but would also make a perfect display piece. 

ENIGMA - a beautiful piece of carved art.

ENIGMA is carved from bone and stained with a homemade dye. Yuri makes this dye himself and uses it to colour the carving - he uses specific teas and varies the length of treatment to achieve the colour he's looking for. In this piece, the dye is a strong gingernut brown and makes the pendant visually very striking. The manaia eyes are made from local Pāua shell - a beautiful fluorescent blue/green colour. There is a delicacy to this piece which is very attractive, it looks very elegant when worn.

Māori believe that carvings carry the spirit of those who wear them, becoming an important family Taonga (treasure) passed on to future generations of the family as an heirloom. 

The manaia is believed to be the holder of great spiritual energy and is a guardian against evil.
