HUG ME
Our second carving representing the Japanese Jizo figurine. This piece is carved from a very pale white/green coloured jadeite stone from Aceh in Indonesia. It is a beautifully subtle coloured piece of jade and very appropriate for this gentle pendant.
Jizo figures often seen in Japan and are a representation of Jizo Bosatsu (Womb of the Earth), a guardian deity in Japanese culture. They are believed to be protectors of children and travellers.
Another, more sombre, purpose of these statues is to protect the spirits of children who have passed away. Japanese traditional belief is that children who die before their parents are unable to cross the river into the afterlife. They have lost the protection of their parents and cannot enter the safe haven the afterlife provides. The Jizo becomes their protector - he is shown wearing a long, gown-like robe under which these children hide and find safety. Jizo Bosatsu becomes the childs caretaker in place of their parents.
HUG ME is carved to be worn or displayed as a standing statuette.
