SOUL FOOD - a hand carved Woolly Mammoth Tusk Toki with Pāua Shell insert.
We have carved these toki from genuine fossilised, woolly mammoth tusk. They are beautiful pendants with lots of character. Each piece is quite unique revealing the individual grain and colourings of material it was carved from - a fabulous and very meaningful gift.
We have three of these only - please use the drop-down menu to select the toki that you would like. Use the cord colour as your guide to make your selection. We can change the cord colour for you - just leave a note in the comments field at the checkout.
We had our mammoth material carbon dated to get an accurate measure of its age. The testing was done for us by GNS Science, a New Zealand Crown Research Institute and New Zealand's leading provider of Earth, geoscience and isotope research - so their assessment of this material is as accurate as is possible using radiocarbon dating technology.
This is a wonderful carving of the revered Māori adze.
The toki, or adze, is a symbol of strength. In pre-iron age times it was a key survival tool, so the owner of a good one was believed to be strong and powerful. In early Aotearoa/New Zealand, the adze was used to carve ocean-going waka (sea canoes) and to build meeting houses so they played a central role in traditional life of māori.
The toki is traditionally worn for strength and courage - to assist through life's challenges.
We also include one of our 'Kia Ora' cards, which explains the meaning behind the Toki design.
