Matau Rua, Double Hook - designed and carved by Rueben Tipene

ATAATA is a unique double Matau, crafted from quality argillite stone. This piece beautifully captures the essence of traditional New Zealand design, making it a distinctive and eye-catching accessory. Wear ATAATA and feel the spirit of New Zealand with you every day.

The stone is a striking deep grey and silver with enough variation to make it unique and fascinating. Rueben has produced a wonderful mixed finish - a satin/matte polish which gives the stone a magical feel in the hand.

We have made a short video of this piece slowly revolving so that you can appreciate the beauty of this piece from all aspects.

The matau, or hook pendant is revered throughout the South Pacific as a symbol for life, well-being and prosperity. Its significance arises from the key role that fishing has played in sustaining island families and communities. The owner of a good hook was respected and held a place of authority in the community.
