FUMIO NOGUCHI

Fumio is a bone carver with extraordinary talent. He brings a wonderful level of skill and attention to his work, a reflection of his passion for the traditions of carving, from both New Zealand and Japan.

Fumio began carving in New Zealand in 2000 under the tutelage of David Paki, a Māori carver from Christchurch. He quickly mastered some of the finer arts of carving, and learned how to use hand tools, which he prefers to this day.

After several years focussing on traditional Māori carved art, Fumio developed an appreciation for netsuke carving, an art form that developed in the 17th century in Japan. This cultural art form has become something of a calling for Fumio, and has greatly influenced his more recent work - detailed subject carving with an exceptional level of skill and craftsmanship.

We have a range of Fumio's work - some traditional Māori and Oceanic art, and some pieces clearly influenced by the more detailed netsuke art form.
