OCEAN JOURNEY - a long, slender whale bone Toki pendant

This particular piece of bone came from a rib and shows the characteristic granular look that we love in this material. It's structured, a little weathered and a great tribute to these mighty ocean mammals.

The bone is polished to a soft shine on the front - the back exhibits the highly textured structure typical of bone from the rib. Interestingly, the carver has followed the curve of the bone and left this piece very slightly bowed, perhaps a tribute to the whale it came from.

This is bound with a black cord and binding. The cord is length adjustable.

Carved from whalebone, OCEAN JOURNEY is a tough toki made to be worn. It will get better with wear and age, so don't be afraid to make it a constant companion.

The toki, or adze, is a symbol of strength. The adze was a key survival tool, so the owner of a good one was believed to be strong and powerful. They were used to carve ocean-going waka (sea canoes) and to build central meeting houses so they played a central role in traditional life of māori.

The toki is traditionally worn for strength and courage - to assist through life's challenges.
