SHADOW

This beautifully bound Toki is carved from Australian black jade - a spectacular and deep black. Each piece is unique and has distinct markings - white inclusions and lines. These are not faults in the jade, they are unique components of the stone and add to its beauty. You can see an example of this in the photo of the piece bound in black.
As an adornment, the Toki, or Adze, is said to bring courage and strength in times of adversity. It is a symbol of courage and strength in times of adversity and is often worn by Maori elders as a symbol of power, wisdom and authority.
Maori believe that carvings carry the spirit of those who wear them, becoming an important family Taonga (treasure) passed on to future generations of the family as an heirloom.
