Fertility

Fertility has always been important for cultures across the world - the creation and protection of new life was as important in ancient times as it is today. Forms were created to pay homage to Gods believed to represent fertility, and carvings were created to ask these Gods to bestow fertility upon the wearer.

The Tiki in particular is a symbol of fertility. It is thought to represent the human embryo, or the Maori god Tiki who was considered responsible for the creation of life. One of the most popular and most recognizable Maori symbols, Tiki is emblematic for the whole Polynesian hemisphere, an emblem of Polynesian cultures from Hawaii to New Zealand. 

Another symbol of fertility is the fish hook, or Hei-Matau. This is a powerful symbol for people relying on kaimoana, or food from the sea, for their survival. They are worn to honour and recognise the key role the ocean plays in life.
