NEW ARRIVAL
MĀTAURANGA - KNOWLEDGE an outstanding piece of jade art carved for us by Ric Moor.
This matau, with koru, is carved from a very striking New Zealand jade. This jade has a soft, speckled green glow.
We have named this piece MĀTAURANGA or KNOWLEDGE. This describes a Māori way of engaging with the world - how to interact, critique and engage with the world around us.
The best way to appreciate this work is to watch the brief video we have taken of it slowly revolving. It really is a stunner! The carved form is bold and subtle - I am holding this piece as I describe it (I'm a one finger typist) and it has little curves and indentations that are difficult to carve in harmony with the overall carving. Ric has achieved that beautifully with this one.
It also has a lovely symbolism combining two shapes that are important in our local culture: the hook and the koru.
The koru symbolises new life, the central spiral shape represents an unfolding silver fern frond - the beginning of its life. The circular movement towards an inner coil refers to ‘going back to the beginning’. This is a fabulous pendant if you're embarking on new challenges. A partner to keep you company.
The hook: The wearer of a Hei-Matau is seen as a provider and protector who is strong willed and determined to succeed in life - what a lovely sentiment to gift to someone important to you.
We provide this with a four plait Khaki coloured adjustable cord. Also included, our 'Kia Ora' cards, which explains the meaning behind both the Hook and Koru design.
