Called MERE ITI (Small Mere) this is carved from a unique piece of stone. Backlit, you can see the variation in colour and swirls of paler inclusions throughout.

The Mere is a type of short, broad-bladed weapon in the shape of an enlarged tear drop. These were traditional weapons used for hand to hand fighting - usually made from Whalebone and wood - the jade mere were often carried by Māori Chiefs as a symbol of their position. Today you will often see mere carried by leaders in formal ceremonial occasions.
