The Woolly Mammoth (Mammuthus primigenius) roamed the earth during the Pleistocene epoch, disappearing from the planet roughly 4,000 years ago. The tusks of these wonderful creatures - some stretching over three metres in length - were composed of a dense, layered ivory known for its extraordinary grain patterns, warm honey-amber tones, and a depth of colour that is distinct and unique.

What makes Woolly Mammoth tusk so remarkable is that every piece we work with has been naturally preserved - most commonly in the permafrost of Siberia and Alaska - for anywhere between 10,000 and 40,000 years. The slow mineralisation process that occurs during this time transforms the ivory, introducing subtle hues of caramel, cream, gold, and occasionally deep brown or blue-grey, depending on the minerals present in the surrounding earth.

Caring for Your Woolly Mammoth Tusk Piece

Because Woolly Mammoth tusk is a natural organic material, it requires a little more care than metal or stone. Follow these guidelines to ensure your piece remains beautiful:

Keep it away from water. This is most important. Prolonged exposure to water - including swimming, showering, or even heavy rain - can cause the ivory to swell, crack, or delaminate. Always remove your piece before contact with water.

Avoid extreme temperature changes. Rapid shifts between hot and cold environments can stress the material. Avoid leaving your piece in direct sunlight, near heaters, or in fluctuating conditions for extended periods.

Store it carefully. When not wearing your piece, store it in a soft pouch or lined jewellery box, away from direct light. Avoid storing it in airtight containers, as ivory benefits from a small amount of ambient humidity - but not moisture.

Clean gently. If your piece needs cleaning, use a very slightly damp soft cloth and dry it immediately and thoroughly. Never use ultrasonic cleaners, chemical jewellery cleaners, or steam.

Apply oils sparingly. A very light application of a natural oil - almond or mineral oil will do the trick - applied with a soft cloth once or twice a year can help maintain the ivory's lustre and prevent it from drying out. Less is more.

Handle with care. While Woolly Mammoth tusk is dense and durable, it can chip or crack if dropped onto hard surfaces.
