EKE KI TE NGARU - Ride The Wave

Hand Carved Bone and Obay Stone Manaia Pendant

We are absolutely delighted to have this outstanding piece available to offer. EKE KI TE NGARU is a large and beautifully carved piece of jewellery, parts very traditional, and with some wonderful personal touches from the artist.

Carved with a great deal of care and thought, the artist describes it's meaning as follows...

This Taonga is named Eke ki te ngaru. This translates to 'ride the wave'. It is a
combination of obay stone, bone, copper, brass, and inlays of pāua.

The stone is the beautiful obay stone. Obay stone is sourced from a valley of one
small area in the Tasman Golden Bay district at the top of the South Island. It is a
mix of blue kyanite, green fuchsite and quartz. There is a scattering of gold and
platinum throughout some seams as well.

Being at the bottom of the carving, the stone symbolises having a strong base or
foundation upon which to rely. Being grounded in love and truth. This is a basis for
transformation. The stone is shaped into a wave upon which the manaia rides. There
are several metaphors that can be drawn from this. Among these, I highlight the
need to ride upon the strength of the divine Most High Atua. Rather than relying
on our own strength, we are encouraged to draw on the spiritual strength from the
peace giver. The brass and copper inlays between the bone and stone represents a
conductive layer between the divine and us.

The eye of the Manaia is an inlay of paua. This represents seeing the colours of life
in their fullest. The manaia, (or messenger), is the profile of a Tiki. This is symbolic
of being half in this world and half in the spirit world. Manaia can be adapted with
other symbols and stylized to communicate different meanings.

The main body forms a koru at the centre of the carving. This represents the
unfolding of new beginnings and transformation of our innermost being. The
kowhaiwhai pattens represents wholeness and vitality. From the state of
wholeness, we are made strong. The wings of the manaia surround it thus
symbolising protection. There are two small inlays of paua aside from the eyes.
They represent hidden character traits of the humble. Within this, great strength
can be found.

Obay is a rare stone located in only one small area within the Golden Bay region near the top of the South Island. It is a fine-grained stone consisting of epidote, biotite, chlorite, rutile, pyrite and gold. Also found in the material is deep blue kyanite crystals to 20 mm length, abundant chromite, and strongly zoned tourmaline forming clusters of minute crystals. This makes each carving with this stone unique and individualised. The smooth texture is very comforting and makes a wonderful touchstone. To care for it, it will benefit from a small rubbing of oil from time to time. Fondling the taonga will not only infuse it with your own energy and love, but it will also absorb the oils from your skin, increasing the sheen and making it truly yours.

EKE KI TE NGARU is lovingly packaged in a woven kete pouch and is provided with a Brown adjustable cord. Also included in your package, a note from the carver about your original work of Art to Wear.
