How did they meet?

She found him half-frozen crumpled on the side of a mountain, a wing snapped, scales dull with defeat. He expected a spear. Instead, she sat down beside him - unarmed, unafraid - and pressed her bare palm to his snout until his ragged breathing steadied. She stayed until the snow stopped.

He had never known a hand that didn't strike. He had never known a voice that wasn't harsh.

Now he curls against her cheek like living armour, his eye fixed on the horizon with a bright, patient dare. He will never leave her - not because she saved his life, but because she was the first creature in this world to touch him and not flinch. And for that, he will burn the world down to the last ember before letting anyone take her warmth away....
