FUEGO ANTIGUO - ancient fire
Hand made in Mexican Amber and Guatemalan Jadeite.
On a recent visit to Oaxaca, Mexico we met with local artists who specialise in producing traditional mesoamerican art using local materials. This is a particularly beautiful piece, hand made by an Oaxacan artist using beautiful materials - the beads are a mix of Mexican amber and Guatemalan jadeite, and the central face is Mexican amber from Chiapas.
The central figure is a traditional design - displaying prominent lips that are found on many statues an figurines throughout Mesoamerica. There are many theories about the history and meaning of these figures, but in this piece the artist is symbolising a traditional mayan face. A prominent 'roman' nose, downturned lips and a slender shaped head are common features of figures from this period.
This is a wonderful piece, beautifully crafted - please note that a couple of the beads at the top of the necklace are split - we have left these as they were received from the artist.
Look at the photos and watch the brief video - this is a lively and very unique pendant. It is a good size, but very light so that it can be worn very comfortably.
