This piece is a beautifully carved New Zealand Jade KĀKĀ PŌRIA (bird leg ring). Hand carved by New Zealand Jade Carver - Andy Ruskin from some of our very finest dark green Marsden Jade.
This is a very traditional design of what was once a functional tool that early Māori used to ensnare native parrots. They used the ring to hold young Kākā which became tame and were then used to attract flocks of curious wild birds - these were then trapped as a food source.
This particular piece is a first class piece of work - beautifully carved from an exceptional piece of jade. This is a small pendant that will grace a special collection - it can also be worn daily as a beautiful piece of jewellery.
