A description of this piece in the artists words below...
This special Taonga has been named KI TE PUPURI meaning to hold. It contains a manaia figure at the tip of this boar tusk and has eyes of pāua. This taonga is capped with turquoise and a layer of copper.
The tusk symbolises protection and great strength. The manaia represents the spiritual aspect of our being and is holding on to the cord in its mouth. The cord ascends above the carving and forms and infinite circle. This can be viewed as one aspect of the Creators nature. That is, infinite and eternal love.
Upon the mouth is a koru. This symbolises new life, fresh beginnings, and unfolding potentials. At another level, being on the mouth symbolises the power of life-giving and uplifting speech. The large mouth represents the passing down of knowledge and wisdom from the elders who have come before us. The oral stories, as well as the written word. The stories of the past help shape the future.
People value turquoise highly for its combination of ancient heritage and unforgettable colour. The layer of copper is symbolic of the sense of connection we have with those who come before us.
The simplicity of the body contrasts the detailed head. As such, this represents the ability to look at various issues with a sense of simplicity and alternatively, look at the same issues with nuance and depth.
