We've named this pendant 'Little Contender' because as Geel Piet once said:
“Little beat big When Little smart. First with the head, then with the heart."
A stunning little Flower Jade Hook/Hei-Matau pendant. Carved from a stunning piece of New Zealand Flower Jade and would make as a great gift for a young person or anyone after a smaller pendant.
Carved by master jade carver - Ross Crump with his trademark attention to detail. This jade was created in our Southern Alps under enormous pressure, and it is exceptionally beautiful and tough because of this. Ross has an unique ability to bring out the very best in the piece of jade he's working with - this is very evident with this piece.
The matau, or hook pendant is revered throughout the South Pacific as a symbol for life, well-being and prosperity. Its significance arises from the key role that fishing has played in sustaining island families and communities. The owner of a good hook was respected and held a place of authority in the community.
We will provide this pendant with a hand-plaited, olive green cord which is length adjustable. We will also include our 'Kia Ora' cards explaining the meaning behind both the hook and koru designs.
