MATIU - named after an Island in Wellington Harbour which often sits at the end of a rainbow.
Hand carved Toki with engraved Tiki face and paua shell eyes. There is a lot happening in this pendant so take a moment to view the short video. This shows the piece rotating so you can view it from every angle. It also reveals the varying colours in the jade.
The toki, or adze, is a symbol of strength. The adze was a key survival tool, so the owner of a good one was believed to be strong and powerful. They were used to carve ocean-going waka (sea canoes) and to build central meeting houses so they played a central role in traditional life of māori.
The tiki is emblematic of the Polynesian Hemisphere and is known and treasured from New Zealand to Hawaii. He is believed to have originated from the stars and was responsible for creating life - in this sense the tiki symbolises fertility.

We also include one of our 'Kia Ora' cards, which explains the meaning behind the Toki design.
