This piece is carved from Tangiwai Pounamu - a gorgeous translucent stone from Anita Bay in Fiordland.
Tangiwai is a Bowenite stone - an iron magnesium silicate and is very rare in New Zealand. It is only found in a small area at the entrance to the Milford Sounds in the South West of our South Island. This stone is regarded as Pounamu alongside our Nephrite Jade and is a rare and unusual translucent form of Serpentine.
We have backlit one photo to show the internal structure of this unique stone.
Tangiwai is the most ancient form of pounamu and takes its name from the Māori 'tangi' - to cry and 'wai' - water, so the translation means 'tears of sorrow'.
This pendant is bound with a black, hand-plaited cord. Take a look at the video to see the shape of the pendant and the variability in the stone.
The drop shaped pendant is known as a comfort stone and is worn to soothe, heal and provide positive energy.
In New Zealand this shape is called 'roimata' and is a stylised, softer version of the toki.
