EARTH'S CORE - we've never seen a matau quite like this before! Creatively carved from a very distinctive, colourful piece of New Zealand jade.

This is a real show-stopper! A strong pendant, beautifully carved and made to be worn.

This large matau (fish hook) pendant is carved from New Zealand pounamu (jade). A defining characteristic of this piece is the carver's deliberate choice to leave the raw, natural rind of the stone forming the outer edge of the hook's curve. This technique creates a striking textural contrast between the polished inner surfaces and the stone's unworked skin, highlighting its natural origin and rugged character.

The matau, or hook pendant is revered throughout the South Pacific as a symbol for life, well-being and prosperity. Its significance arises from the key role that fishing has played in sustaining island families and communities. The owner of a good hook was respected and held a place of authority in the community.
